The most interesting people are never completely sane, and I mean that as a compliment. Case in point: Amy Sedaris, the most madcap brilliant person on the planet.
I was late to discover Amy. I happened upon Strangers With Candy, the superb Comedy Central show from the late 90s/early 00s that she created along with Paul Dinello, Mitch Rouse, and Stephen Colbert, in 2013. In it, she is every bit Jerri Blank, the most lovably vile character to ever appear on television (even more so than Rafi from The League and Kenny Powers). Amy Sedaris gets lost in Jerri Blank. The gorgeous, tiny, tan-skinned Sedaris morphs into a putty colored misfit with teeth on the verge of rotting completely away and hair that is, in a word, bewildering. Jerri Blank holds the title of uttering the most disgusting bit of verbiage I’ve ever heard (“I like the pole and the hole, and right now I’m as moist as a snack cake down there. So, why don’t you come over to my crib after school, and I’ll make your pinky aaaall stinky”). Strangers With Candy is a parody of the After School Specials that were popular in the 70s and 80s and are still popular today in Canada by way of Degrassi.
The most intriguing thing about Amy is her charming affinity for peculiarities and oddities. I was thrilled to find out she joined Instagram this past week. I had a hunch she would post photos of bizarre and unique finds, and of course she did! One photo is of a guinea pig sitting on top of aluminum foil with a square of butter on top of him/her, another is of a pair of shoes that make her laugh, but my favorite is the photo featured below. Only Amy Sedaris would have a shadowbox that displays a cold sore. She inspires you to notice all the little things around you and to laugh more; to laugh at everything and to embrace the abnormal. She’s written two books, I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, and Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People and they’re both great platforms for her to really highlight her creativity and love for all things bizarre. She’s hysterical and quick-witted, and the perfect role model for anyone who is different and unusual. Embrace your bizarro self.
